The History of The Double Love Experience Church

PHASE one

The Double Love Experience (DLE) Church held its first worship service on October 21, 2018 in a Brooklyn Coffee Shop called The Brooklyn Commons in Downtown Brooklyn, where 80 people attended in-person and over 400 people viewed on livestream. DLE spent all of 2018 in a “preview year” where we convened an interdisciplinary cohort of launch team members, quarterly worship services, and quarterly DLE dinner experiences to build community.

Phase One spanned from 2018 to the Fall of 2019. The principles in this phase were our pastors, Pastor Gabby Cudjoe-Wilkes & Pastor Andrew Wilkes, along with Launch Team Core Leads: Luc El-Art Severe, Ashley Brown & Ken Miles. George Oswald Chambers served as our Minister of Music & Aphia Sylvester served as our vocal director. In February 2019, we introduced our annual pop-up Ash Wednesday service at the NYC Barclay Center Subway Station.

PHASE TWO

On November 4, 2019 we moved into Phase Two of our congregational life by moving into a new location and launching our weekly worship service. Our launch team remained the same but Daniel “Flash” Revell became our Minister of Music.

In this phase of our church, we introduced several ongoing ministries of our church including: The Show Some Love Hospitality Team, Noon Day Prayer (NDP) Wednesday Prayer Team, The Show Up Social Justice Team, as well as the DLE Ministerial Fellowship.

In December 2019, we launched our annual DLE Kwanzaa Service. In July 2020, we launched our Summer Worship Series, DLE Stoop Talks as well as our recurring DLE Outside Worship Services at Hancock Community Park in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.

During Phase Two, which lasted from 2019-2023, God’s sustaining grace helped us to survive the COVID-19 pandemic, lean fully into hybrid ministry, train seven ministers & execute our call as a love & justice church committed to the liberating, love-powered ministry of Jesus the Christ. In the Spring of 2021, we brought on our new & current Minister of Music—Malik Hammond.

PHASE THREE

Double Love Experience, by the goodness of God and the faithfulness of our congregation, is currently embarking upon our third, exciting phase of ministry. After four years of impactful ministry in Williamsburg, Double Love Experience Church moved its physical location for Sunday service to Bed Stuy Restoration Plaza, located at 1368 Fulton Street, where we hold weekly worship services at 1:30 p.m.

To support this transition, we are launching the Stuy Squad, a community of believers, creatives, organizers, storytellers & professionals who can help us curate a sense of welcome, connection & collaborative partnership within the Bed-Stuy community. We are overjoyed about what the Lord is doing in our midst in this season & invite you to join us as we endeavor to be a Jesus movement for all Black lives.

Double Love Experience church is an open & affirming congregation, which means that we are committed to the theological conviction that all of God’s children deserve a safe, nurturing & welcoming environment in which they can grow in faith, serve the Lord with gladness, and help advance God’s mission of love, justice, joy & salvation through creation, culture & society.

Join us for:
